The United Nations peacekeeping operations are the world's largest and most complex peacemaking force. Since the first UN peacekeeping mission was deployed in 1948, the UN has deployed over 70 peacekeeping missions to conflict zones around the world. These missions have played a vital role in preventing and resolving conflicts, protecting civilians, and promoting peace and stability.
The Oxford Handbook of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations is the most comprehensive and up-to-date resource on the history, theory, and practice of UN peacekeeping. Edited by two of the world's leading experts on the subject, the Handbook brings together contributions from over 50 scholars and practitioners to provide a comprehensive overview of the field.
The Handbook is divided into five parts. Part I provides an overview of the history and evolution of UN peacekeeping. Part II examines the theoretical foundations of UN peacekeeping, including the principles of impartiality, consent, and the use of force. Part III examines the different types of UN peacekeeping missions, including preventive deployments, peace enforcement operations, and post-conflict peacebuilding missions. Part IV examines the challenges facing UN peacekeeping, including the increasing complexity of conflicts, the rise of terrorism, and the growing demand for peacekeeping operations. Part V examines the future of UN peacekeeping and makes recommendations for how to improve the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping missions.
The Oxford Handbook of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations is an essential resource for anyone interested in the history, theory, or practice of UN peacekeeping. It is a valuable tool for scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and students alike.
