Shin Dong-hyuk was born in a North Korean prison camp in 1982. His father was a political prisoner, and his mother was a camp guard. Shin was raised in a world of fear and violence, where starvation and torture were commonplace. He was taught to believe that the outside world was a dangerous place, and that North Korea was the only true paradise.
Kim Eun-chul was born in a rural village in North Korea in 1984. His family was poor, and he often went hungry. At the age of 13, Kim was sent to a labor camp, where he was forced to work long hours in dangerous conditions. He was beaten and humiliated by his guards, and he lived in constant fear of being executed.
In 2005, Shin Dong-hyuk and Kim Eun-chul escaped from North Korea. They crossed the frozen Tumen River into China, and then traveled to South Korea. They were both granted asylum, and they now live in the United States.
First Taste of Freedom is the incredible true story of Shin Dong-hyuk and Kim Eun-chul's escape from North Korea. It is a testament to the human spirit and the power of hope. Their story is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for a better future.
