Richard Dunlop was born in Ireland in 1905. He was a brilliant student and a talented athlete. After graduating from Trinity College Dublin, he joined the British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). In 1940, he was sent to the United States to work with William Donovan, the head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS),the forerunner of the CIA.
Dunlop's mission was to gather intelligence on Nazi Germany and to sabotage its operations in the Americas. He posed as a businessman and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Latin America. He met with German agents and informants, and he gathered vital information on Nazi plans and activities.
In 1941, Dunlop was involved in the planning of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He provided the OSS with information on the Japanese fleet that helped to shape the American response to the attack.
After Pearl Harbor, Dunlop continued to work with the OSS in the Pacific theater. He helped to organize guerrilla warfare against the Japanese in the Philippines and Burma. He also worked with the Chinese Nationalist government to resist the Japanese invasion.
In 1944, Dunlop was sent to Europe to help plan the Allied invasion of Normandy. He parachuted into France behind enemy lines and met with French resistance fighters. He helped to organize the Resistance and to prepare for the invasion.
On D-Day, Dunlop landed on Omaha Beach with the American troops. He fought his way through the German defenses and helped to secure the beachhead. He continued to fight with the Americans as they advanced into France and Germany.
After the war, Dunlop returned to the United States. He worked for the CIA for several years before retiring in 1965. He died in 1991 at the age of 86.
